The flu can be nasty no matter who you are. Aches, pains, fever, and what I find to be the worst part - exhaustion. When all of these factors hit you at once, you are down for the count.
If you are anything like me, you are on the go and constantly moving. For me, the hardest part about having the flu is making myself stop - but I have found that without stopping, there is no getting over it! Here a my Top 4 Tips for getting over the flu:
Drink Your Fluids: Drinking the proper amount of water and staying hydrated should be vital activity in your day-to-day life; however, even more fluid intake is needed during the flu. The flu starts in our lungs with mucus buildup, and so the water helps to break that down and loosen it up. Not to mention, water helps to lubricate our muscles in order to keep them strong and feeling "alive". While the flu is going to cause us to slow down one way or another, drinking water can help to relieve some of the effects and help you to feel better. When your body is working properly, it can fight off disease. By depleting your body of the fluids it needs, your are hindering your bodies healing capabilities.
Get Your Nutrition: Garbage in equals garbage out. You may want nothing but soup and grilled cheese while you are sick - and now and again that is fine - but you need your body to be at top performing shape if you want to get rid of the flu quickly. Focus on un-canned fruits and vegetables in order to take in natural sources of Vitamin C, as well as other immune-boosting vitamins to continue to help you feel your best.
Delegate Your Tasks: For you parents - I know this is hard and it might even be impossible, but to the best of your ability delegate your tasks. Get the kids to Grandmas if you can, have your spouse pick up some of your usual household chores, offset your workload at work. While these are some of the harder things to do due to simply the variances in our own responsibilities, stress does nothing to increase your immune strength. It is only temporary and your body will benefit in the long term, helping you to get back to action more quickly, and not be backed up on your workload when you do. It's a win-win for everyone.
Rest: And finally - rest. Your body might tell you to stay in bed - stay in bed. Your body might tell you to sit down after walking up a flight of stairs - sit down. Your body might wake you up for an hour, and put you back to sleep for 5 - just let it happen--and try your best to be okay with it, which I know can be hard. Your body isn't doing what it is doing to frustrate you, it is doing what it needs to do to survive and get you back to your normal self. Let things happen.
I know giving up control can be difficult, especially when in today's world there isn't much time available to just stop what you are doing; however, by continuing to go against your body you are going against what is needed to heal. The body is a well-functioning machine as long as you are giving it the fuel to do what it needs to do. By ignoring any of the 4 areas above, your body does not have the go-power needed to fight off what is dragging you down. Surrender, fuel up, and rest on.
